Louisiana's No. 1 rated defensive end prospect for the Class of 2004 is Shreveport-Evangel phenom…
Louisiana's Top Rated Defensive End
The six-foot-three, 240-lb. speed pass rusher has already been named to Street and Smith magazine's preseason All-America list and he just returned from making an unofficial visit to LSU for Nick Saban's one-day lineman camp. How was the experience? "It went pretty good," Bowers told TheInsiders. "It rained until about noon and then it cleared up, but it was pretty hot and muggy out there. In the one-on-one pass rush dills I did good. I went twice and won both times." Beating offensive tackles off the ball is something Bowers has perfected over the years. As a sophomore, he emerged as one of the state's top pass rushers with 25 sacks. With the reputation he earned following that fantastic season, Bowers faced more double-teams as a junior to no avail. He still managed to sack opposing quarterbacks 18 times and posted 99 tackles, while picking up All-City, All-District and All-State honors. Bowers is currently sitting on 15 scholarship offers but that list should grow considerably between now and National Signing Day. As of now, who is in the mix? "Out of that group, right now I guess I'm really looking at Stanford, Texas Tech, Ole Miss, Nebraska and LSU," said Bowers. "I don't think I have anyone ahead of anyone else right now." The only school Bowers has not received an offer from that he is looking at is Oklahoma but the Sooners stay in touch with the heavily recruited lineman on a regular basis. In the past, Evangel's top players have chosen to go the Big 12 route with Texas, Texas Tech and Oklahoma scooping up the school's top recruits. Many fans in the Bayou State hope that trend will come to an end this year and Bowers will sign with the home-state Tigers. Does LSU have a legitimate shot? "I've been down there a couple of times and checked everything out," he said. "I saw the academic center for the first time when I went to the one-day camp and it was impressive. I know they have a good tradition going down there and coach Saban is doing a good job. Its close to home but not that that is going to play a big factor."
