Before everything is said and done, Michael Ferns may be Ohio's top prospect in the 2014 recruiting…
Ferns Continues To Be Surprised
For St. Clairsville (Ohio) linebacker Michael Ferns this spring was supposed to be the beginning of him working to get his name out in front of college coaches and possible picking up an early offer or two before the start of his junior year. Instead, Ferns is the hottest prospect from the Buckeye State in the 2014 recruiting class as programs like Notre Dame, Stanford, Virginia and Wake Forest have extended early verbal scholarship offers. Over the past week a few more programs have added their names to the 6-foot-3, 238-pound linebackers impressive list. "West Virginia showed up and it was pretty exciting," said Ferns. "I grew up a West Virginia fan having been born there and still have family that lives there." While excited about the Mountaineers offer, it was another offer that might have pushed Ferns to rock star status at his high school. "Coach (Ed) Warriner was the original coach from Ohio State that came by and visited me," said Ferns. "Then a couple of weeks later coach (Luke) Fickell showed up and the school kind of flipped over that. "Even before I was told he was there some of my friends told me he was in the building. So when I show up there was like five or six teachers standing around trying to talk with him. The school went crazy about him being there, but I was trying not to make a scene as I'm sure that gets annoying after a while. It was exciting for someone like that to show up at school and it was pretty awesome." When asked what might happen if Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer ever showed up, Ferns was quick to give his opinion. "If that would ever happen, the whole school might end up burning down," said Ferns. What was the reasoning for coach Fickell's visit? "He wanted to size me up and see how tall I was," said Ferns. "Later, I was told to give coach Warriner a call. So when I called him he put Coach Meyer on the phone and he talked about Ohio State for a bit and then said they were going to offer me." Does Ferns have interest in the Buckeyes? "I'm interest," said Ferns. "It's exciting but I'm going to try and take it all in before I try and make a decision next year." If adding Ohio State wasn't enough, Tuesday night Ferns received word of another offer he's excited about. "Coach (Charlie) Fisher from Penn State is a coach that came and visited me at school," said Ferns. "I've talked with him a couple of times and he was the coach that talked with me when I went up to visit the school before the spring game. "Tuesday morning after coach Fisher was done talking with coach (Brett) Mclean, he gave me a piece of paper and said for me to call Coach (Bill) O'Brien and gave me his cell phone number. He said don't call until after dinner time and that worked out as I usually eat dinner then make most of my calls anyway. "So I called and Coach O'Brien talked up Penn State and said they have some good things going on there. Then he brought up the offer. I didn't expect that to happen as I thought I would have to go to camp to get an offer so for this to happen before hand is real exciting." Tuesday nights excitement carried over to Wednesday as Ferns added another big offer he's excited about. "I've talked with (assistant) coach Jerry Montgomery from Michigan," said Ferns. "They have now offered and this is all overwhelming as things are happening so fast." As for his interest in the Wolverines, Ferns knows there is more to like about the program than just football. "Academics are a big part of the decision I'll be making," said Ferns. "Michigan is more than just a football school as they are up there academically. I'm looking forward to learning more about them in the coming months." While Ferns knows some will look to apply pressure as the process continues, he's not ready to jump into making a decision at this time. "I'm going to look at all schools equally and not get into pitting one school over the other," said Ferns. "I don't have a preference over a team because of who I watched two or three years ago. I'm staying open minded and will look at everything this summer before making any decision."
