Devin Scott put his speed on display at the Class 5A outdoor state track meet in early May, finishing second in the 200 meters with a 21.3.*
Scott also took third in the long jump at the state track meet. He was named All-Metro Boys Track Team with an area best of 23-10 in the long jump, an area best of 21.3 in the 200 meters, and he ran a leg on the area best 4 X 100 (41.53) and 4 X 200 (1:26.24) relay teams.
He's being recruited for both football and track, and the UL Ragin' Cajuns offered scholarships to both Scott and '13 offensive lineman D'Aquin Winthrow this week, according to a member of the West Jefferson coaching staff.
Scott and Winthrow (6-5, 275) each have offers from Colorado and Florida International, respectively, and Scott also has a couple of in-state FCS offers from Southern and Grambling State.
In February, FIU signed four prospects from the West Bank of New Orleans - where West Jefferson's campus is located: Darrian Dyson and Leonard Washington (both defensive linemen from Edna Karr), and Marques Cheeks (OL/DL) and Raymond Jackson (WR) of O. Perry Walker.
Colorado has offered West Jeff three-star wide receiver Ronald Lewis, as well. The Buffaloes have been recruiting Louisiana extensively under Coach Eric Bieniemy - who has longstanding family ties to the state.
Bieniemy landed WR/DB Jeffrey Hall out of St. Charles Catholic this year.
The Ragin' Cajuns have several effective recruiters. Highly-respected coach Tim Rebowe does stellar work in Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and the River Parishes - which are sandwiched between those two cities.
West Jefferson made an appearance in the first round of the 2011 5A bracket. The No. 30 Buccaneers were ousted, 56-21, by third-seeded Byrd High School from Shreveport.
This fall, West Jeff is expected to pose a serious threat to 5A defending state champion West Monroe. The Buccaneers served notice of their speed at last month's Big Man On Campus 7-on-7 tournament held at Behrman Stadium in Algiers, claiming second place behind only a Louisiana Bootleggers Elite squad that was buoyed by three LSU commits.
