Duke landed a terrific three-star athlete in cornerback prospect Johnell Barnes (Fort Myers, Fla./Dunbar). Barnes can play on both sides of the ball at wide receiver and defensive back from the Blue Devils.
“Duke showed a lot of interest and it’s really the best of both worlds,” said Barnes at the USF 7-on-7 Sling and Shoot over the weekend. “You can’t do any better. They have academics and athletics. I can play early and the campus and coaches are great.
“I think I will play receiver there. Maybe even corner too.”
Barnes, 6-foot-0 and 170-pounds, is the country’s No. 32 ranked cornerback prospect. He prefers the other side of the ball.
“I will give Duke some speed on offense,” Barnes said. “I have good hands and I can run routes. I will give them a little swagger as well.”
Barnes also believes the future is bright in Durham.
“Coach [David] Cutcliffe has some great plans at Duke,” Barnes said. “He’s building the program, they are adding to the stadium and they have some nice facilities. This is exciting.”
