The Opening: Christian Hackenberg
Fork Union (Va.) Military Academy quarterback Christian Hackenberg has been in Oregon at The Opening for just over a day and is finally starting to settle in. "I think it has been a little hectic, coming from the East coast," said Hackenberg. "But the facilities are great, top notch. It's a great opportunity to come out here and compete against the top guys." Hackenberg committed to Penn State in February and has little doubt about why he made his decision. "I feel from an atmosphere standpoint, academics and football, I just fit in," said Hackenberg. "If I got hurt on the first day, I'd still be happy on campus. It's only five hours away from home and two hours from my grandparents." His future teammates are another big reason the quarterback is excited to get to Happy Valley. "All of us met at the spring game, we're a really tight class," said Hackenberg. "A bunch of great kids and great football players." So will Hackenberg be part recruiter this weekend and look to add to the class? "Of course, mainly just talking with them and seeing what their feelings are," said Hackenberg. "It's been tough, but we're working through it and building a pretty good class." Hackenberg has also been invited to the Elite 11 later this summer and talked about what he focuses on heading into camps and his senior season. "This stuff is fun and I am just enjoying this," said Hackenberg. "I have done what I need to do in my high school career. So I am just trying to lead my team to a state title and give other people on my team the chance I had." Jake Worthen is a West Recruiting Analyst for Scout.com.
