'16 Intro: Mykel Jones
"He's going into the ninth grade," said Edward Jones, the father of Patterson (La.) prospect Mykel Jones. "Last year, his eighth grade football team only lost one game: 21-14 to (powerhouse) Anderson Middle School (New Iberia, La.). "Mykel scored at least two touchdowns in every game but Anderson. We played Anderson pretty tough but couldn't get by them. He's a wide receiver/safety whose future probably lies on offense in college because he wants the ball in his hands. It all depends on the program when it comes to position, though, so you could say he's an 'ATH' (athlete)." Jones gets it done in the classroom, too, which isn't surprising (dad is an attorney). "Mykel was vice-president of the Beta Club last year," said dad. "He just made 14 years old. He can easily dunk a basketball. He hasn't gone to any football camps this summer because he's been extensively involved with AAU basketball. His team is No. 1 in the state in their age group. They're 28-2 in Division I -- and are going to nationals. He averages 20 points per game and is a big-time basketball prospect. "During summer 7-on-7, he's been one of the two deep safeties. On offense, he's played all of the different receiver positions. He likes LSU. He has a relationship with (current LSU RB) Kenny Hilliard, because Mykel's older brother (Justice Jones) was Kenny's quarterback. "Kenny would always come by the house when he was in school at Patterson. Mykel also likes Florida. Those (LSU and Florida) are the only two schools he's ever mentioned. He likes the high-flying type of offense that Florida had under Urban Meyer." Patterson is known for producing a ton of per capita football talent (town's population was approximately 5,250 in 2009), and the future looks great with prospects such as Jones and 2015 WR Daylon Charlot (6-0, 180). "Daylon is a raw talent who is strong, has good hands, and has a 31-inch vertical," said Jones. "I coached all these guys in Pop Warner football. We're bringing Justice to school (the '12 QB will be a true frosh at Texas Southern) soon, and I think he'll do well in the SWAC." Patterson, our preseason No. 1 in Class 3A last year, went 9-0 during the regular season. The Lumberjacks lost in the second round of the playoffs to subsequent state champion St. Charles Catholic. The 'Jacks are coached by Tommy Minton. Last year's team featured four-star LB Lorenzo Phillips (LSU), three-star CB Trevon Stewart (Houston), three-star WR Jaydrick Declouet (Louisiana Tech), LB Tremaine Lightfoot (Ragin' Cajuns signee), CB Kiyan Jones (Arkansas-Monticello) and Jones. Key underclassmen who will return this fall include three-star TE Deondre Skinner (Arkansas commit) and QB Denzel Johnson, who started last year as a DE.
