Peter Picerelli knows Rhode Island isn’t exactly a hotbed for producing FBS players, and he is proud to be the latest in a short line of players to be on the list.
Picerelli, a punter at La Salle Academy (Providence) recently committed to Tulane, and he will head to New Orleans in a few weeks for training camp with the Green Wave.
“Tulane was just the perfect fit,” Picerelli said. “Going into the recruiting process, academics were always at the top of my list of priorities. Tulane was a no-brainer for me as it offers-big time football at a prestigious university. Not many schools in the country can offer both.”
The 6-foot-1, 185-pound Picerelli landed at Tulane after several other planned stops. He originally committed to Navy, but changed his mind and was set to spent a post-graduate year at Milford Academy.
“I had a preferred walk-on spot at Tulane with the old coaching staff,” Picerelli said. “Oddly enough, the new coaching staff and special teams coach Barry Lamb finally offered me a scholarship about two-and-a-half weeks ago after talks of about two months.”
Picerelli, who averaged 43 yards per punt as a senior, quick jumped at the opportunity.
“I really like all the excitement around Tulane football right now,” he said. “Coach Curtis Johnson and the staff are bringing in some great recruits. Pre-season camp starts Aug. 5, so I will be heading down (Aug) 2 or 3 to move in.”
