With one of the most recognizable head coaches in the game Oklahoma has proven it can go in to any state to recruit and the roster in Norman truely reflects a melting pot -- featuring talents from states like California, Illinois, South Dakota, Ohio, Missouri, Kansas, Maryland and Florida.
Hatari Byrd, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound 4-star safety from Fresno (Cali.) Central High East gives the Class of 2013 the same diverse look featuring 12 commits from four different states.
Byrd was one of the most physically imposing looking players at The Opening in Oregon. His upper body is already well developed, which is deceptive in some regards, because he still has the long arms and long legs of a rangy safety. His 120.39 Sparq testing results also show that his athleticism is off the charts, most impressive was his 4.12 pro-shuttle time.
Sooner State Sleeper
Keep a close eye on the development of Jenks (Okla.) wide receiver Jordan Smallwood.
Currently rated as the No. 110 WR in the country by Scout.com, the 6-foot-2, 192-pounder collected over 700 yards last season in an offense that is known to typically ram the ball down its opponents throats.
His development has followed the scripts written by former Tulsa metro area stars like CB Aaron Colvin and WR Keon Hatcher. Players who flew under the recruiting radar early on in the recruiting process, but blossomed to earn major offers and national attention.
On the field, Smallwood has nice size and a good overall blend of skill sets. He also plays with discipline, which could help him see the field quicker in college.
The Crown Jewel
Keith Ford, a 5-foot-11, 195-pound running back from Cypress (Texas) Ranch was the first player to commit in the Class of 2013 and he set a pretty high precedent. The five-star prospect is currently rated as the No. 3 RB in the country by Scout.com.
Ford brings a nice blend of skills to the table. He is the perfect candidate to get the ball in short yardage situations to move the chains or punch in a touchdown inside the 10. He hits the hole with power. Once he sees the crease he explodes in to the clearing.
He is the type of back who can wear down a defense, but also shows home-run ability. He has good vision and even though he is a bruising running back he has great feet and above average speed. He should be an early impact type of player for the OU program.
