Cincinnati Moeller (OH) product Keith Watkins felt comfortable enough on his tour of Northwestern…
Watkins Sold On Wildcats
Last season Moeller High School (Cincinnati, Ohio) running back Keith Watkins rushed for 625-yards and nine touchdowns in ten games. While Watkins is set to carry an even bigger load this fall, he felt his future in college should be on the defensive side of the ball. "I committed to Northwestern today as a defensive back," said Watkins. "I feel Northwester is a great fit for me because if I'm going to try and make it to the next level, defensive back is the right position for me. "No matter what conference I would have gone, at running back you are going to get dinged up on every play by linebackers and such. Plus right now corners and safeties are going high in the draft. So that is one of the main reasons I wanted to move to defensive back." Not only was Watkins sold on the Wildcats, his entire family was onboard. "My family and I were just thinking about how our visit at Northwestern went and it was really good," said Watkins. "I got to see a lot of things and the campus is really good and the coaches are really nice. Head Coach Fitzgerald is great and I felt Northwester was a really good fit for me. Plus, I'll be playing defensive back instead of running back when I get there and that is what I wanted to play. They were one of the schools offering me for that position and that is where my family and I felt I needed to be." Other programs Watkins was considering included hometown program Cincinnati along with West Virginia and Iowa. One of the reason for the weekend announcement is for Watkins to put all his energy towards helping Moeller reach a state title game. "It is really good to get this out of the way," said Watkins. "I can now focus all my efforts in helping our team get to a state championship." As for the main reasons on and off the field Watkins was sold on the Big Ten program, he said it was easy. "Football wise it was all about Coach Fitzgerald," said Watkins. "I felt he was the coach that needed to coach me in college. "Non football wise, it is all about the academics as I know the academics at Northwestern are beyond great. I also know once I'm done there I'll be ready for the real world."
