Class of 2013 three-star quarterback and Kansas commit Montell Cozart leads Bishop Miege against…
Summer Recap: Montell Cozart
Montell Cozart remembers what it was like a few years ago, watching the offer letters come through for the older players. "I was patiently waiting for my day," the 6-foot-2, 185 pounds quarterback said. "Like 'When am I going to get my letter in the mail?'' Last week, that day finally arrived, when a formal offer arrived in the mail from the University of Kansas - the school to which he has been committed for a handful of months. Cozart described his receipt of the offer as "exciting." In recent weeks, he has put his future on hold in order to focus on his senior season with his teammates at Roeland Park (KS) Bishop Miege High School, but he maintains a strong relationship with the Kansas coaching staff. "I talked to Coach (Tim) Grunhard today and Coach (Charlie) Weis yesterday," he said during an interview Thursday evening. "So it's starting to pick back up." A summer of hard work is coming to a close for Cozart, and it has paid off big. Not only did he decide where he wanted to go to college, but he put on 15 pounds of muscle and took a big step toward filling the leadership void vacated by graduated seniors such as current Jayhawk Tre Parmalee. "I'm a captain on the football team, so that was one of my goals - to be one of the leaders of the team and to be able to lead it to another championship," he explained. "And just being able t build chemistry with our team." After losing Grunhard - formerly the Stags head coach and now the offensive line coach with the Jayhawks - and a number of talented seniors, Cozart feels Miege might be overlooked this season within the city. However, the school stayed in house in its search for a new coach, placing offensive coordinator and Miege alum Jon Holmes in charge and thereby maintaining continuity. "A lot of teams and media around the city are kind of doubting us," Cozart said. "We lost Grunhard, we lost Parmalee, we lose some of our best players. Little do they know we're going to show them Miege is reloading."
