Quick Hitter: USM commit Draper Riley
Draper Riley had a summer to remember. The 6-4, 245-pound senior committed to Southern Miss in July. He also enjoyed a banner outing at the Big Man On Campus 7-on-7 tourney held in May in Algiers. With Riley antagonizing opposing linebackers and defensive backs, West Jefferson reached the championship game of the BMOC tournament. The Buccaneers stormed to an early lead over eventual champ "Louisiana Bootleggers Elite," thanks to Riley creating mismatches in the passing game. While the Buccaneers came up just short at the BMOC, finishing second, the team's effort was impressive. Riley drew rave reviews from a Bootleggers Elite squad that was an all-star cast of blue-chip prospects (such as LSU commits Jeryl Brazil, Tre'Davious White and John Diarse, all four-star prospects who manned secondary spots). West Jeff was ousted in the first round of the 2011 postseason by Byrd, but the Buccaneers could be much better this year with players such as three-star WR Ronald Lewis, CB Parry Nickerson (Tulane commit), OL D'Aquin Winthrow and WR Devin Scott (both Ragin' Cajuns commits), and Riley. "Practice is good good," said Riley. "I'm going both ways: at tight end and defensive end. We have a couple of tough games on the schedule against Rummel and Brother Martin. "Rummel's quarterback, Damian Williams, is real tough. Brother Martin has a running back (Jabbar Singleton) that is real good. We're trying to spread the ball out; if one of our receivers is double-teamed that will create a lot of openings." Riley says he is solid to Southern Miss. He plans to take an official visit to Hattiesburg prior to National Signing Day. "I'm really excited about Southern Miss," he said.
