The 2012 season started with several surprises and plenty to digest. No. 1 Bolingbrook and No. 2 Maine South remain in their respective seats at the top of the new FOX Sports NEXT rankings, but several teams rose and fell after week one.
The old adage that defense wins championships could very well serve to be true this season, with several impressive defensive units in stock this season.
Many strong defenses were on display during the season's first week, leading to the question: which school has Illinois' best defense? We put that up for debate with the FOX Sports NEXT Illinois analysts.

 "Defense is the name of the game this week, so it's no surprise that some of the best defensive teams in the state are at the top. The top four teams gave up a combined 27 points (14 of which were by Maine South). They say defense wins championships, and the last two 8A state champions are again ranked 1 and 2."
