Week one of high school football in the state of Illinois is history, with several surprises along the way. Which teams rose and fell after their first games? FOX Sports NEXT unveils its week two rankings after an exciting slate of action

The 2012 season started with several surprises and plenty to digest. No. 1 Bolingbrook and No. 2 Maine South remain in their respective seats at the top of the new FOX Sports NEXT rankings, but several teams rose and fell after week one.

The old adage that defense wins championships could very well serve to be true this season, with several impressive defensive units in stock this season.

Many strong defenses were on display during the season's first week, leading to the question: which school has Illinois' best defense? We put that up for debate with the FOX Sports NEXT Illinois analysts.

Allen Trieu - National Recruiting Analyst, FOX Sports NEXT
"At this early point in the season, I haven't seen them all yet, but Glenbard West's defnse looked really strong in holding Wheaton Warrenville South's potent offense to only seven points. Led by defensive end Ruben Dunbar, that group is aggressive and disciplined. "

Beth Long - Midwest Field Reporter, FOX Sports NEXT
"I'd have I say the team defense that I am most intrigued by is Crete-Monee. Top 2013 WR Laquon Treadwell switched over to free safety this year. His coach said he was "deadly" at the position, and he recorded 4 solo tackles and 3 assisted tackles during the first game. Crete-Monee is also highlighted by top 2014 LB Nyles Morgan and transfer DB Jaylen Dunlap."

Chris Emma - Publisher/Reporter, PurpleWildcats.com
"The Glenbard West defense has long been a tradition of excellence in the state of Illinois. The group known fittingly as the "Hitters" is one of the state's elite units once again this season, as was evident during a week one win over Wheaton Warrenville South."

Ryan Easterling - Reporter, IllinoisPlaybook.com
"Defense is the name of the game this week, so it's no surprise that some of the best defensive teams in the state are at the top. The top four teams gave up a combined 27 points (14 of which were by Maine South). They say defense wins championships, and the last two 8A state champions are again ranked 1 and 2."
