Through two weeks, Zeeland East junior Spencer Viening has 331 rushing yards and seven touchdowns in leading the Chix to a 2-0 record.
A varsity starter since his freshman year, the 6'0, 200-lb Viening fought through cramps and injury to score twice in East's thrilling 60-52 victory over rival Zeeland West.
"I was cramping and I got a helmet to the knee," he explained, "and I had the same thing happen last week, so obviously, it's pretty painful. It probably would have taken somebody coming out to cut my legs off to get me out of this game."
Viening also came up with several key tackles from his safety spot, a position he could line up at in college. Currently the interest has come from a varied group consisting of schools from Division-1 to Division II and Division III, but there are some big boys too.
"A few Big Ten schools. I've gotten letters and been talking to Nebraska, Michigan, Michigan State, those kinds of schools."
As for visits, he says, "I'm still working on that."
That's because he's preoccupied with making sure his team recovers from this week's tough, physical game and continues rolling on through this season.
"We're all physically and emotionally drained right now, but it just feels amazing for us to come out with this win after everything we've been through and all the work we've put in as a team."
