Narrowing It Down: Koa Kaleopaa
It came down to the last two minutes but La Mirada (Ca) couldn't quite pull out the victory over Bishop Amat (Ca) on Friday night. Even with the loss, three-star linebacker Koa Kaleopaa remained optimistic about his performance. "It was a tough game. These guys were fast but we kept up with them and played physical and made them work," Kaleopaa said. "Although we lost I feel I had a good game but you can always do better because it's a loss." Except for a few plays in which he lined up at defensive tackle, Kaleopaa spent most the night at middle linebacker, although it remains up in the air if he'll play there at the next level. At 6'3 245 pounds, Kaleopaa could easily add weight and make the transition to defensive end or tackle. The position change may largely depend on which conference Kaleopaa decides to play in. With offers from Arkansas, Mississippi, California, Arizona, Colorado, Hawaii, Washington State, Wyoming and Utah, he says he is open to every opportunity. "I'll play wherever. If that means defensive end, defensive tackle or linebacker it doesn't matter. Just line up and play football," Kaleopaa said. "If I go to the SEC I think it'd be best to stay big and stay at linebacker because a lot of linebackers like Courtney Upshaw and Dont'a Hightower are big and fast and I think I could be like them." Although there are no official visits set in stone yet, Kaleopaa has started to trim down his offer list and look into making officials. "I'm thinking about going to Cal, Arkansas, Colorado, and Ole Miss," he said. What does he like about each program? "Arkansas and Ole Miss are big time football. The SEC is where all the big time players are," he added. "Pac-12 wise, I have the determination and discipline to lose weight and get faster to keep up with the spread offenses. We did a lot of conditioning over the summer so I feel like I've gotten a lot faster." Kaleopaa is a physical linebacker that has good hands to shed blocks but still needs to improve sideline to sideline and filling the hole quicker.
