Behind the passing of junior-to-be QB Shea Smith (tournament MVP), Odessa Permian was crowned 2003 champions by dispatching Burnet 41-27.
Burnet, looking to become the first 3A team to win the state's 7-on-7 tourney since Celina pulled the trick in '00, came up just short. Still, wrapping up a very respectable second place -- primarily due to the monster tandem of QB Stephen McGee and WR Jordan Shipley -- the Bulldogs can take solace in the fact that they competed against the best and certainly did not play like an underdog.
Southlake Carroll, like Permian, also boasted a talented junior-to-be signal caller as QB Chase Daniel guided his team through the "Consolation Playoff Bracket" to defeat Katy 54-40 and grab third place honors.
Katy, with its quick and nimble but smallish skill position talent, was a feisty bunch as they left College Station with a not too shabby fourth place finish.
Here's Saturday's breakdown of the "Championship Playoff Bracket" and the "Consolation Playoff Bracket" with scores and each team's top prospects included in parentheses.
