Scout Recruiting Team Out West

A look at the games that the Scout Recruiting Team out West will be hitting this weekend...

THURSDAY

Modesto (Calif.) at Modesto (Calif.) Downey at 7 p.m.
Downey features the top quarterback prospect in Central California in 6-3, 195-pounder Aaron Zwahlen.  The lanky Zwahlen committed to Hawaii to play for Norm Chow in his pass-happy offense, but several schools are still keeping an eye on him as he's in his senior season.  Zwahlen is LDS and plans to serve a mission, so schools who are looking to bring in two quarterbacks in this class, are watching him closely. Glendale (Ariz.) Deer Valley at Peoria (Ariz.) Centennial at 7:00 p.m.
Centennial has been one of the state's best teams over the past decade and despite losing last week, they still will contend for the D2 state title. UCLA commit Jalen Ortiz is the Coyotes' playmaker. Ortiz has the speed to score on any play, is a threat in the pass game and is a lockdown corner. Ortiz runs behind one of the state's top offensive lines and no one is hotter than junior OT Layth Friekh. The 6-foot-5 Friekh was offered by Utah, Arizona and Oregon State last week. Seniors Hayden Johnson and Spencer Nathe both have Air Force offers and junior OG Kamryn Bennett will get offers before it is all said and done. Quarterback Tre Grant is having a great year and Air Force and New Mexico have shown the most interest. Expected to be back from suspension and injury is DE Marcus Farria. Deer Valley is lead by 6 foot 4 junior quarterback Devon Palomino.  (@jason247scout, @InnaLazarev)

Snohomish (Wash.) Glacier Peak vs. Bothell (Wash.) at 7:00 p.m.
Bothell (Wash.) 2015 quarterback Ross Bowers is one of the top young prospects in the state. Bowers already displays the arm strength and poise needed for the college game. As with any young player, he is looking to improve his consistency. Earlier this year against Skyline he played nearly perfectly in the first half, before turning the ball over three times in the second half. Bothell fullback and BYU commit Darrin Laufasa is a powerful runner that has also shown the ability to catch the ball out of the backfield. He will also line up at linebacker and is a playmaker for the Cougars. Bothell running back Danny Wilson and cornerback Reshon Watson have college potential and are worth keeping an eye on.  (@JakeWorthen)

San Clemente (Calif.) vs. Lake Forest (Calif.) El Toro at Trabuco Hills HS at 7 p.m.
San Clemente graduated a few big playmakers last season, leaving the road open for offensive guard Sean Harlow (6-5/260), the team's most highly-touted prospect. Though he held offers from the majority of the Pac-12, among many others, Harlow ended his recruitment in July by committing to Washington. He has plans to graduate early. El Toro's offense is led by quarterback Conner Manning, a prospect who emerged after being named the QB MVP at the Southern California Nike Football Training Camp this summer. The 6-foot-2, 195-pound player committed to Utah in July.  (@AnnabelStephan)

FRIDAY

Concord (Calif.) Clayton Valley at Concord (Calif.) Ygnacio Valley at 4 p.m.
Clayton Valley has one of the biggest sleepers in the East Bay in two way threat Joe Prothroe, a running back/linebacker, who projects to fullback at the next level.  Prothroe is 6-1, 210-pounds, but is a punishing blocker and a good runner.  A number of Mountain West and WAC programs are evaluating him. (@BrandonHuffman)

Pleasanton (Calif.) Foothill at Concord (Calif.) De La Salle at 7 p.m.
The state's top program features a loaded roster, headlined by U.S. Army All-American Michael Hutchings, a four-star outside linebacker who's committed to USC.  He leads the Spartans' vaunted linebacker corps, that includes three-stars Victor Egu and D.J. Moffitt.  The Spartans will be without three-star tight end/defensive end Austin Hooper, who's nursing a knee injury.  On the defensive line, Sumner Houston, a 2014 prospect, who's the younger brother of Wisconsin freshman quarterback Bart Houston, reminds many of former Spartan four-star and current Oregon State defensive lineman Dylan Wynn.  Foothill has Cal commit Raymond Hudson as their primary offensive weapon and some talented underclassmen, including Isaiah Langley, a sophomore and another sophomore quarterback in Kyle Kearns.  Defensively, linebacker Griffith Gates leads Foothill while Jamirr Holland is one of the premier defensive backs in the West in the 2014 class. Upland at Rancho Cucamonga (Calif.) at 7:00 p.m.
You could see double digit players sign Div I scholarships from this game in February. Upland defensive end Joe Mathis is a top 100 national recruit and a monster up front. He'll have his choice of just about any school in the country and often mentions Washington, Nebraska, Alabama, USC and UCLA on his ever evolving list. Upland safety James Johnson is coming on and is looking at Oregon State, Arizona State and Houston. Quarterback Nate Romine is still waiting for his first offer to roll in but he's an excellent high school signal caller and great at managing the game. Rancho Cucamonga is led by one of the nation's top secondary's in USC commit Chris Hawkins and elite safety Tahaan Goodman. Hawkins is a lock down corner and Goodman, looking at USC, UCLA, LSU, Nebraska, Washington and several others, is a big hitter at safety with cover skills. Inside linebacker Viliami Latu is a tremendous prospect and his twin brother Alani Latu can fly around and hit. San Diego State and Arizona State are at the top of their list. (@GregBiggins)

Mesa (Ariz.) Desert Ridge at Chandler (Ariz.) Basha at 7:00 p.m.
Great match-up between two one-loss teams that could compete for the D1 state title. Basha is led by Arizona commit wide receiver Nate Phillips. Phillips has already caught 42 passes for 698 yards and 8 TDs. Desert Ridge looks string in the trenches. OT Josh Scow has an offer from Idaho, OT/DE Nick Allen has been offered by San Diego State and Colorado and is having a great year in his first year on the defensive side of the ball. RB J.J. Husar is having a very good year and Southern Utah has shown the most interest.  (@jason247scout)

Seattle (Wash.) Rainier Beach vs. Sammamish (Wash.) Eastside Catholic at 7:00 p.m.
Sammamish (Wash.) Eastside Catholic cornerback Markell Sanders committed to Washington State before the season. At 6'1" 175lbs, he has a great frame for the position, but he struggled at times in coverage over the summer. Very intrigued to see how he looks on the field. Rainier Beach offensive tackle Leo Keilani is massive, standing 6-foot-10, 340-pounds. Keilani has earned offers from Idaho and Wyoming, but needs to improve his foot speed and athleticism.  (@JakeWorthen)

Sherman Oaks (Calif.) Notre Dame vs. Mission Hills (Calif.) Alemany at 7:00 p.m.
Both teams are pretty well stocked with college talent with Alemany wide receiver Steven Mitchell being the top prospect in the game. Mitchell, a USC commit, is arguably the top playmaker in Southern California and should cause problems for Notre Dame's defensive backs all night. Alemany also has a pair of talented defensive backs in Colorado commit Devin Ross and, Alif Grayes, a 2014 cornerback. Notre Dame has a high-powered offense led by three-star quarterback Kelly Hilinski and speedy tailback Khalfani Muhammad, who has a double-digit offers and just returned from his official visit to South Bend for the Notre Dame-Michigan game.  (@KevinCarden)

North Hollywood (Calif.) Harvard Westlake at Santa Fe Springs (Calif.) St Paul at 7:30 p.m.
Harvard Westlake's offensive line features one of the top uncommitted prospects on the West Coast in the 6-foot-5, 280-pound Thomas Oser, who is seriously considering offers from Stanford, Oregon, Vanderbilt, Oregon State, and Utah. He'll take his time making his decision. Quarterback Chad Kanoff (6-4,195), a Vanderbilt commit, has been putting up big numbers throughout the season and says he is one-hundred percent solid to the Commodores.  One of the most exciting players on St. Paul's roster is 2014 running back Kurt Scoby (5-8, 215), who had an impressive summer, picking up offers from Miami (FL) and Oregon State. Though he may not be the tallest player on the field, he's in contention for being the strongest, spending a good amount of time in the weight room. He's also interested in Nebraska, UCLA, USC, and other Pac-12 programs. Two other players to keep an eye on are receiver Alec Dana and 2014 tight end Darrell Cloy, who both impressed with their 7on7 teams during the off-season.  (@AnnabelStephan)
