Woodard's Experience Paying Off

West Lafayette (Ind.) junior running back Maurice Woodard is putting up big numbers this season, and is ready for his first unofficial visit of the season.

Last week, Maurice Woodard set several school records when he rushed for 312 yards and five touchdowns through a driving rain to lead his West Lafayette squad to victory.

Not only were those marks the best in school history, but Woodard also set the school's all time rushing mark, and he's only a junior.

What has helped him, though, was an early entrance to the fire, as he has played on varsity since his freshman year.

"It wasn't a lot to deal with, but it wasn't easy," he said. "There were a lot of bigger guys, but it was mostly fun, because my older brother was on the team also, so I got to play with him. It was a different level of speed and competition, but it helps me a lot now."

The Red Devils are currently 6-1-1, and Woodard believes he and his team are hitting their stride at the right time.

"Personally, I think the first couple games weren't my best games, but I think I'm playing well. As a team, I think I'm one of only twp returning starters, so a lot of guys are getting better as the season is going along, stepping up, and we're looking good for playoffs."

The 5'11, 180-lb Woodard is just beginning to hear from schools, but is ready to take his first visit of the season this weekend, and it's to a school who he may eventually earn an offer from.

"Mostly just Purdue, I've been talking to them. They're pretty interested in me. I'm going on a visit this weekend to watch a game."

Of course, it is a quick visit, and Purdue is very close to home, and although he was not born in West Lafayette, Woodard is very familiar with the school.

"I lived in Chicago until fifth grade. I know a lot about Purdue. I've been to a bunch of games, watching the team, but I don't know much history."

As the recruiting process moves along, he is likely to hear from more schools, and there are some that he knows he hopes to hear from.

"I've always been a Michigan fan when I was younger, so that would be cool or someone like an ACC school, just because I think that's an interesting conference."
