Major College Attention Surprising to McNeil

Decatur Central (Ind.) has a 6'7 junior offensive tackle in Lukayas McNeil, who is receiving BCS interest, and had a Big Ten school stop at his game last week.

At 6'7, 260-lbs, it seemed like a certainty that schools would eventually find out about Decatur Central junior offensive tackle Lukayas McNeil. However, the speed at which the major programs have come in are a testament to, not only his size and ability, but how much he has improved throughout this season.

"It's my first year on varsity," he admitted. "I'm doing pretty good, better than I thought it would be. I'm trying to get better. I didn't think it would be this much work. I played when I was little, but then I stopped and played other sports, then I started playing back in 9th grade."

McNeil also plays basketball and throws in track and field, but it is becoming quickly apparent that football is the sport he has the most potential in, and the one which may punch his ticket to college.

"I"ve gotten a lot of mail from Ball State, Arizona, Arkansas, Louisville, Florida, Florida State, Notre Dame, it's a lot. I just had Michigan State come up there and watch me. They said they want to keep in touch with me, and I'll probably hear back more from them."

McNeil has not taken any visits yet, but wants to, and has two schools in mind that he hopes to get to first.

"I really want to visit Florida State and I want to go visit Michigan State for sure, both of those two."

Will a first offer come? The way things are trending, that is a strong possibility. When McNeil decided to start playing football again, and when he started his first varsity season this year, none of this seemed likely, but it is now a reality.

"It's actually really surprising. I never thought that I would be in this position, so I never thought this would be me, all these colleges looking, but I work real hard for it. I get a lot of help from my coaches and everything, but it's surprising that it's me."
