Gardena (Calif.) Serra High School senior receiver Darrell Fuery (6-0, 180) put up big numbers Friday night, including three receptions for touchdowns, to defeat rival Los Angeles (Calif.) Cathedral, 42-3.
As the teams leading scorer this season, Fuery is beginning to catch the eye of some schools.
“I have been talking to Fordham, Colorado, San Jose State, UTEP, UCLA, and I'm hoping to get some more.”
So far, Fuery has planned an official visit to UTEP on November 29, and took an unofficial to UCLA on Saturday for their game against Utah.
When asked what other schools he wants to hear from, he stated the following.
“Oregon, that is my favorite school. My uncle went there, and I have been watching them my whole life. Since I’m from Southern California, everybody is all about USC. I do love USC; my two best friends go there. But Oregon, Oregon is my heart.”
Serra has been know to produce stellar wide receivers including the USC stars Robert Woods and Marqise Lee, and Fuery took full advantage from learning under them.
“They taught me a lot, I ran on the same track team with them. They are my brothers, I love them.”
For the time being, Fuery remains focused on the rest of the season. With a record of 5-2, 1-1 in league, he knows the importance of every win from here on out.
“I don't want to lose anymore games, you know those two loses meant a lot to me, and if we would have lost this game, or anymore games we probably couldn't go to the playoffs. So really my key goal this year is making it to the playoffs, hopefully we just keep pushing and hopefully we can make it to state.“
The win on Friday snapped Cathedral’s six game winning streak, and Serra’s two game losing streak. The Cavaliers are hoping to continue adding W’s to their record with their game against La Canada (Calf.) St. Francis next Friday.
