Sherman Putting Up Big Numbers

Kenton (Ohio) junior quarterback Grant Sherman is one to watch, as he is having a big season filling some big shoes.

In his first season as starter, Kenton High junior quarterback Grant Sherman has put up numbers many would consider a successful career.

The system head coach Mike Mauk runs is quarterback friendly and has produced Division-1 quarterbacks in the form of his sons Maty and Ben, but that makes Sherman's accomplishments no less impressive.

To date, the 6'4, 200-lb signal caller has completed 66 percent of his passes for 3,283 yards, 41 touchdowns to only five interceptions.

"It's something I grew up with," he says. "I was a little kid wanting to play in Kenton system, so for me, it's something I've always grown up with."

Coming in behind Maty Mauk presents challenges, but Sherman has been up to the task and retained his humility even through all the success, and he has received plenty of help along the way.

"Of course I felt a little bit of pressure, but I've gotten a lot of support. Maty was big help, Maty's brother Ben is the quarterback coach, so it's not as much pressure as people outside think it would be."

Sherman's season may take him from relatively unknown in recruiting circles to many recruiting boards.

"I went to Ohio State's football camp this past summer. I didn't have any interest or letters. It went pretty well. I learned some things. There was a lot of talent there, being Ohio State and all. I talked to a few MAC coaches and had a few conversations, but there were a lot of kids there, so not too much."

As he begins to receive more interest, he is not closing himself to anyone who comes along. After all, he is used to scanning a field full of options.

"To be totally honest, I never had a favorite NCAA or college team, so any Division-1 team I'd be interested in hearing from. Of course, it would be nice to hear from the Big Ten, since I grew up in the Midwest."

In his last game, a win over Celina, Sherman passed for 451 yards and six touchdowns. He has also rushed for four touchdowns this year.

He and the Wildcats take on Defiance this week.
