Mattingly Updates Recruitment
Spokane (Wash.) Mead tight end Danny Mattingly had gone silent the past couple weeks after rumors circulated that he had decommitted from Notre Dame. The rumors caused an influx of phone calls and messages that left the four-star athlete frustrated. The assumption by many was that Notre Dame had given Mattingly an ultimatum that any official visit would cost him his offer. The 6'6" 225lbs prospect took a chance to set the record straight Friday following practice. "Right now I am still committed to Notre Dame, but I am taking visits," said Mattingly. One of those visits was to Washington back in October when they played USC; he talked about what stood out on the trip. "It was fun, an awesome chance to see the coaches again. Those are really great people up there," said Mattingly. "Just to meet some new players too, which I didn't get to do the first time I was up there. (An unofficial visit back in June)" Mattingly isn't sure how many total visits he will take or when he will take one to Notre Dame, but does have plans for next weekend. "I have one next weekend to Oregon," said Mattingly. "But hopefully that doesn't work out because my team keeps winning (laugh)." If he is forced to cancel the visit for a state tournament game, Mattingly noted he would reschedule with Oregon later in the year. Mattingly broke down how he deals with the pressure and attention that comes on the field and in recruiting. "Basically it is a team first thing, I am here to focus on winning a state championship and that's all I am focused on right now," said Mattingly. "All that other stuff I just try and push off to the side at least until the end of the season." Jake Worthen is a West Recruiting Analyst for Scout.com.
