Thompson Nears Decision Time
Duane Thompson is within two weeks of selecting his college destination, he told FOX Sports Next. The HD Woodson (DC) running back will discuss his final five schools this weekend with his family before Thompson will need to make a quick decision so that he can enroll in January to his school of choice. The five schools of interest: Colorado, Illinois, Kansas, Hawaii and East Carolina, none of which has he taken official visits too yet. "I am not leaning towards anyone right now. My family will get together this weekend and narrow it down to one or two schools and see what officials I can quickly take, but I want to make sure it's the right decision and not rush into anything." What will make it feel right without having the chance to step foot on all of these campuses beforehand? "I have to go off what people are saying or maybe take a last minute trip, but if I feel a vibe from the coaches and players and interact with the players, that support system what's most important to have, and good tradition." Thompson admits he has the best relationship with the coaching staff from Illinois and Hawaii. Illinois is the only school he has visited, not once but twice, though unofficially. "I went to Illinois once for camp and once to meet the coaches. I got a nice vibe from the coach up there. He is the leader of that team and it's a good program." "Travon Bellamy went there years ago and knew him from this area. And Tavon Wilson plays for the Patriots now, so I am definitely looking at that, how they have a trend of putting guys guys into the league." Hawaii is certainly a little more difficult to get to, but he likes the idea of making his own path. "I want to set my own path and leave my own mark. Coach Jones, my recruiter, deals with a lot of guys from DC, and he is a really good coach." Colorado may still be far from his Washington, D.C., home, but he won't be paving his own path there. He will be joined by former teammates Kenneth Crawley, De'Jon Wilson and John Walker. "Colorado is getting a fresh start, which is good. It's good to have fresh eyes come in with a new coach and everything. They have a lot of talent and being a part of turning their program around could be something special." Kansas is in consideration because of the style of offense they will be running. "Coach Mitchell and I are close. Charlie Weiss bringing that pro-style offense over there is great. I have aspirations to go into the league and at Kansas I would be on the right track. " And then there's ECU, the option closest to home. "I believe they are getting a new coaching staff, and it was rumored the old coach could become the new coach and they were ranked back then so that would definitely be a school I would consider. And I know I could help get them on the right track." Stay tuned as Thompson will hope to come to a decision within the next two weeks.
