Gathrite Signs with Miners
It was a busy week for Riverside (Calif.) College cornerback Nick Gathrite, as he not only graduated from the school, but also committed to play football at UTEP. The 5-foot-9, 175-pound prospect had also been receiving interest from Eastern Michigan and Eastern Illinois. Though he contemplated taking visits to those programs, he couldn't pass up on the opportunity of playing for the Miners once the offer arrived. "I like UTEP's new coach, Larry Coker, and I feel like their program is going to be on the rise. They have a nice stadium and I like that they are in Texas because I have a lot of family there. "I really liked how real [cornerbacks] Coach Gabe Franklin was and how he coaches the secondary. I think it will be a great fit for me to excel in all facets of the game," he said. Gathrite had a successful sophomore season with the Tigers and could see growth on the field throughout the year. "Our season went pretty well. We went 9-2 and won our Bowl Game, so we were happy about that. I think I did pretty well. I started off strong and finished strong. I think I really improved with my man coverage and with my tackling. Our coaches are great and really helped me. I think my quickness, my break on the ball, and my jumping ability are my greatest strengths at the position," he said. The athlete has three years to play two and will join the team in January. "I am going to go to El Paso on the 12th to sign and I'll go back for school on January 20th," he said.
