USAAAB: Monday West Recruiting Notebook
Five-star linebacker Mike Mitchell (Prestonwood Christian Academy/Plano, Texas) will make his decision Saturday during the game. He reports he will have three hats lining the table: Ohio State, Texas A&M and Oregon. Mitchell admits Ohio State commit Ezekiel Elliott has been working him to the Buckeyes. --------------------- Upland (Calif.) defensive end Joe Mathis will also be announcing Saturday at the game, choosing from a final five of Alabama, Texas A&M, USC, UCLA and Washington. He breaks each down, and discusses possible factors, here: VIDEO --------------------- Five-star defensive tackle A'Shawn Robinson has been committed to Texas since February, but became a soft verbal this fall after making official visits to Florida State and USC. And while he reports he is "100-percent solid to Texas," he still has officials planned to Alabama and Texas "pretty soon." (Unsure on exact dates) "I'm just comparing other schools to Texas to make sure I'm making the right decision," Robinson said. "I didn't get a chance to take my visits before I committed because of family issues, so just taking them now." As far as the Texas staff's thoughts on visits: "They're telling me it's ok; I can take my visits. They haven't really said too much about it. As far as right now, I'm not thinking about leaving or anything, though." --------------------- Bellevue (Wash.) linebacker and UCLA soft verbal Myles Jack will take four visits in January: to UCLA, Arizona State, Washington and Oregon. Because Washington quarterbacks coach Marques Tuiasosopo (who is recruiting him) would not be his position coach at UW if he winds up there, Jack admits "the Tuiasosopo name" (that is large in Seattle area) is not a huge factor for him in the grand scope. --------------------- * Jake Raulerson said that he's recruiting Virginia running back Derrick Green to join the 2013 Texas recruiting class. Green, ranked as the nation's No. 2 back, told Raulerson that he liked Texas, but hadn't heard anything from the Longhorns. Raulerson's response? "I can change that real quick." Texas recently lost its running back commitment in this class when Arlington (Texas) Martin product Kyle Hicks switched his pledge to TCU. --------------------- * Multiple Notre Dame commitments mentioned the same rallying cry for why they elected to join the Irish: "It's not a four-year decision, it's a 40-year decision." Explained by both linebacker Jaylon Smith and wide receiver Corey Robinson, that motto derives from the value of a Notre Dame education, and the impact that a degree from the school can hold even after football is long gone. --------------------- * Is Deon Mix a solid Mississippi State commitment? Mix said his goal this week was to put Mississippi on the map, and said that he's trying to get all the uncommitted players to join him in Starkville. But when asked how solid of a commitment he was, Mix had the following statement: "At first I was like, ah, I'm [solid]. But after awhile I was like, no matter what, have fun." Mix concluded by adding: "I'm headed to Mississippi State, but it just depends. Only time can tell." --------------------- Since Dallas-area defensive tackle Justin Manning pulled the trigger with Texas A&M last month, rumors have been circulating that he would be making a visit or two elsewhere before National Signing Day. To those rumors, Manning laughed. "I'm actually thinking about getting 'Gig'Em' tatted on my back, so I don't know what they're talking about." --Greg Powers and Kevin Flaherty contributed to this report.
