ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - There was a lot of talent at the 2013 Under Armour Combine and and we talk…
Berrios draws familiar comparison
Braxton Berrios heard a loud shout during warm-ups at the 2013 Under Armour Combine on Friday morning. "Wes Welker!" Not new to the 5-foot-8, 172 pounder is the comparison to the New England Patriots star, but the source of this one was different. After a few more yells, it was evident that it was Deion Sanders that repeated the phrase throughout the event. Though Berrios held his own without the comparison, it certainly helped. "I did pretty well, Deion liked me," he said while laughing. "If you get on Deion's team, you're alright. I thought I did pretty good, I competed well. There's great talent out here and you win some you lose some. "I won more than I lost, so that's a good thing." With over 150 participants at the combine, Berrios wasn't focused on standing out, he was just focused on doing what he knows best. "You've gotta play your game," he said of his mentality. "You can't pay attention to what other people do. You have to be true to yourself and use what got you here." What got the early three-star to St. Petersburg for the event was productivity and upside. College coaches have taken notice as well, and it has led to offers from nearly 10 schools with more potentially on the way. "Virginia Tech, Maryland, Minnesota, Wake Forest, Duke, North Carolina, ECU, South Carolina," he listed." Ohio State, Clemson or Florida could be next. A random one could come up. I talk to ‘Bama every week, (Paul) Gonnella likes me and wants me to come down there and do what I do. "I'm just going to relax and let it come to me." With no rush in recruiting, the Raleigh (N.C.) Leesville Road High product continues to enjoy the process. "I'm open, I'm having fun with it," said Berrios. "I'm not stressing about it, I'm not worried about it. Everybody says when you know you know – so I'm just waiting to know. "I could end up committing tomorrow, but I don't think it will be until early next fall." Berrios is rated the No. 58 wide receiver in the class of 2014 at this time.
