While Notre Dame fans may have taken their licks last night watching the BCS
Championship Game, the big picture looks very good for the Irish. Notre Dame
just finished a 12-1 season and is bringing in another Top 5 recruiting class.
The star of the class is linebacker Jaylon Smith (6'3/225) of Bishop Luers High
School in Fort Wayne, Ind.
Smith is the No. 1 outside linebacker prospect in the country and is a Top 5
prospect regardless of position. He has a terrific frame to come in and
contribute early. He is a flexible player with good quickness and speed. He's
athletic enough that he could conceivably play safety, though linebacker is
clearly his calling. He has a terrific first step and closing speed, and he
plays the game with instinct.
One of the reasons his instincts on the field are so well honed is because he
plays all over it. At Bishop Luers, he lined up at outside linebacker, inside
linebacker, defensive end, and running back. He's a special player who Irish
fans hope can take them one more step.
