Several standouts at Jacksonville SIU Combine

Posted Jan 15, 2013

The Step It Up Combine drew nearly 200 players from north Florida in Jacksonville on Sunday, and Scout takes a look at some of the top performers.

MVP
Josiah Carter turned in an outstanding performance. Everyone talks about Dillon Bates at Ponte Vedra, but Carter is another tremendous linebacker prospect there as well. At 6-foot-2 and 206 pounds, Carter ran a 4.6 and had the best vertical jump (37 inches) and broad jump (10-5) at the event, showing off tremendous athleticism. He lists Wisconsin, Texas A&M (father went there), and Indiana (brother goes there) as some early favorites. He looked like a major college prospect at this event.

SPEED
There's always a good group of fast players at any event in the state of Florida, and this one was no different. Several players clocked a 4.52 or better, but the Fastest Man Award went to North Marion High running back Jack Reed. At 5-foot-9 and 155 pounds, Reed ran for over 600 yards as a sophomore season and added 300 more as a receiver. He could play running back or slot receiver in college, and could really flourish in a spread offense especially. He put his name on the recruiting map here. Reed lists West Virginia, Oregon, Florida State, Florida, and USF as his early top five.

STRONGEST MAN
Strength is the name of the game for Raines standout running back Ashton Hall. At 5-foot-10 and 181 pounds, Hall put up 185 times 27 times. That's not all he did, either. His 3.97 shuttle run was just one way he showed off tremendous change of direction skills at this event. Hall scored eight touchdowns as a junior this past season. He lists Florida State, Florida, Miami, Georgia, and UCF as his early top five.

THE FUTURE
While a large number of players at the event were rising seniors, there were several quality sophomores there too. There wasn't a sophomore more impressive than A.J. Turner. At 5-foot-10 and 170 pounds, Turner made the 11-hour drive from Clifton, Virginia where he plays at Centreville High. Turner was outstanding on the field as a junior, finishing the season with over 2,000 yards of offense and 15 touchdowns. He also added 32 tackles and five interceptions on defense. He's a major college prospect already, and has 4.4 speed that people will fall in love with. He was outstanding at this event. He lists Alabama, Florida, Virginia Tech, Oregon, and Clemson as his early favorites. He's definitely a player to remember in the 2015 class.
