West: Final Top Ten Safeties
West: Final Top Ten Safeties 1. Su'a Cravens Location: Murrieta, Calif. High School: Vista Murrieta Size: 6-1, 205 Recruiting: Committed to USC The Skinny: Cravens is not just the top safety in the West, he's the top overall prospect in the region as well. He would also be the top linebacker in the region and would rank among the top receivers in the area as well. The USC commit plays primarily linebacker in H.S and is a explosive hitter who closes on an opposing ball carrier faster than anyone in the West. One of the most versatile players the Golden State has produced, Cravens was selected to the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. 2. Max Redfield Location: Mission Viejo, Calif. High School: Mission Viejo Size: 6-2/195 Recruiting: Committed to Notre Dame The Skinny: Redfield might be the best all around athlete in this group and doubles as a wide receiver and could definitely play on the offensive side of the ball in college but was recruited to play safety. Redfield's best asset is the range he covers and the amount of plays he makes in the secondary. He's always around the football and his explosive leaping ability allows him to make a ton of plays in the red zone on both sides of the ball. Selected to play in the UnderArmour All-American Game. 3. Tahaan Goodman Location: Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. High School: Rancho Cucamonga Size: 6-2/190 Recruiting: Committed to UCLA The Skinny: Goodman exploded this past spring/summer and raised his stock more than any other defensive back. He could be the most complete safety on this list as he's both an explosive hitter and punishing hitter and has excellent range and balls skills as well. He has a great frame that will be able to hold more weight, runs very well and is a sure tackler. He breaks down very well, runs right through opposing ball carriers and doesn't miss tackles. He covers a ton of ground in the secondary and it's tough to find any real weakness in Goodman's game. Goodman was selected to the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. 4. Tyler Foreman Location: Encino, Calif. High School: Crespi Size: 6-2/190 Recruiting: Committed to UCLA The Skinny: In just about any other year, Foreman would be at the top of this list as he's a very talented player with every physical tool you could want in a college safety. He's the biggest safety on this list measuring in at a very solid 6-2, 195 pounds. He can run and cover and is a big hitter. He has the athleticism to play free safety but the toughness, size and hitting ability to play in the box and could even bulk up in to a linebacker. He's a natural leader as well and has tremendous upside. Don't be surprised if Foreman outplays several players on this list rated higher than him in college. 5. Hatari Byrd Location: Fresno, Calif. High School: Central Size: 6-2/200 Recruiting: Committed to Oklahoma The Skinny: Byrd surprised a lot of people with his summer commitment to Oklahoma but he'll fit in very well in the Sooners defensive scheme. He's not as athletic but could play a similar role as former Sooner Tony Jefferson as a cross between a safety and linebacker. He's the most physical safety in the region with under-rated athleticism. He can run with tight ends and some big receivers but his strength in college will be as an in the box strong safety stuffing the run. He brings an intimidating presence to the field and has the kind of enforcer mentality you want on your defense. Byrd played in the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl. The Next Five: 6.
