Plano, TX, February 13, 2013 – On Saturday, February 9, 2013, Prestonwood Christian Academy Senior Linebacker Mike Mitchell was awarded the Texas Built Ford Tough Player of the Year Award for private schools.
Mitchell racked up 190 tackles, four sacks, seven quarterback pressures, five forced fumbles and also had a 100-yard kickoff return. During the regular football season, Mitchell was named as the Texas Built Ford Tough Player of the Week.
“We are extremely proud of Mike for receiving the Ford Built Tough Texas High School Player of the Year Award. This is an award that not only takes into account what is done on the field, but who the young man is off the field as well. I don’t think there is anyone more deserving than Mike based on this criteria,” states Head Football Coach Chris Cunningham.
Last week Mike signed his letter of intent to play his college career at Ohio State University after he announced his decision on national television during his participation in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. Mitchell was also recently named to the Parade All-America Team.
Mitchell is a Scout.com five-star prospect, rated as the No. 2 MLB prospect in the country and the No. 28 prospect overall nationally.
Greg Powers Breakdown: Mitchell patrolled the middle of the field for PCA and racked up huge defensive stats. He is a tackle making machine. He shows his open field speed by closing quickly on ball carriers and making crunching and fundamentally sound tackles. He has a high level of athletic ability and it shows. He could realistically play any linebacker spot in college, but has the attitude of a true 'Mike Backer' with the ability to cover sideline-to-sideline.
