Core 6 Showcase Ohio - Defensive Standouts
Defensive Line Malik McDowell - Detroit Loyola (Mich.) - MVP At 6'6 and over 290-lbs, he still lined up outside for most of the day and had effectiveness playing on the edge. He's still working on his technique, but all of the necessary raw tools are there. Dylan Thompson - Lombard Montini (Ill.) Nice sized kid with a great motor. He was jumping back into every drill, going twice at times, and didn't know any speed but full speed in 1-1s. He, like McDowell, still has to keep working on technique, but you know you're getting a high intensity guy. Chris Slayton - Crete-Monee (Ill.) Has a nice frame and runs well for a kid that's about 6'5. He needs to develop some pass rush moves, as he's getting by on raw ability right now, but he certainly has D1 tools. Shahid Bellamy - Oak Park (Mich.) Young kid who was very light on his feet and nimble in footwork drills. 2015 guy who has a chance to be a good one. Others: Avon (Ind.) defensive linemen Mack Duffin (2014) and Joey Belden (2015) both have nice frames and good motors. Linebackers Clifton Garrett - Plainfield South (Ill.) - MVP He's known as a hitter, but he made a lot of plays in coverage. He had interceptions, diving break-ups and was impressive in drills. He's shown this offseason that he's a three-down linebacker. Others: Illinois products Robert Spillane, Colton Moskal, Mason Matesevic, and James Natchigal all looked good moving around in drills. Nile Sykes continues to show that he's not just a pass rusher and can play stand up linebacker as well. Detroit Catholic Central's Dylan Roney worked out at linebacker. We like him as a hybrid pass rusher who can play with his hand down or from a two-point at times.
