Sophomore linebacker Ricky DeBerry was offered by Iowa last week. The offer from the Hawkeyes is No. 7 for the 6-foot-3, 235-pound linebacker.
“Iowa has always had a good football tradition,” said DeBerry. “I've always heard good things about them – the program – the fans – and that it’s a good school.”
“I called Coach (Jim) Reid (defensive assistant at Iowa), who used to coach at UVA,” he said. “We have a good relationship, so we were just catching up and then he offered me. He told that he liked the way I play football and that he respects me as a player. He also told me that he wanted me to go up there and visit.”
DeBerry also holds offers from East Carolina, North Carolina, Purdue, Tennessee, Virginia, and Virginia Tech.
Of the schools that have offered, DeBerry said North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and Virginia Tech have shown the most interest. DeBerry also said he has been getting consistent interest from Kentucky, Michigan State, and Ole Miss.
The 2015 prospect said he will likely visit Iowa soon. He also has some trips scheduled in the near future.
“I’m going to Alabama’s spring game on April 20,” said DeBerry. “I’m also visiting Virginia Tech on April 6 and hopefully getting down to Tennessee and UNC soon, too.”
As for the summer, DeBerry will camp at LSU and possibly Florida State.
DeBerry finished his junior season with 55 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries and an interception.
Update: DeBerry was offered by Penn State this morning.
