Jackson Commits to Virginia

The Virginia class of 2014 grew one stronger Sunday afternoon when Woodgrove (Purcellville, Va.) DE/OLB J.J. Jackson made his verbal commitment. Jackson chose the Cavaliers over other finalist Old Dominion and marks the fourth commit in the class.

It was emotional for Woodgrove (Purcellville, Va.) DE/OLB J.J. Jackson received a verbal scholarship offer from Virginia and it did not take long for him to commit to his home-state school.

Announcing his decision Sunday afternoon, Jackson picked the Cavaliers in what he described as an ideal program.

"A lot of stress is gone because I made my decision," Jackson said. "I'm pretty set on UVA. I feel good. UVA is an ideal school for me. I say that a lot but I really mean it."

Jackson called Virginia coach Mike London Sunday to inform him of the decision to commit.

"He was really, really excited," he said. "… He was like ‘man, this is such a blessing.' It's great. He told me this is definitely the best recruiting class, right now, we've ever had."

Jackson joins five-star safety Quin Blanding on the class of 2014 defense for Virginia.

Jackson chose Virginia over four other offers, including Duke and Old Dominion.

"My No. 2 school was ODU. They showed so much love," he said. "I just got off the phone and told [ODU]. It was just such a relief. A lot of weight was on my chest and now it's been relieved. It was definitely stressful."

Proximity to home was one of the deciding factors in Jackson's recruitment, he said, and picking the Cavaliers was a decision embraced by his family.

"[My mother] loved UVA and now I'll be close to home," he said. "It's pretty cool."

Jackson checks in at 6-foot-4, 220 pounds. As a junior, he recorded 12 sacks and 82 tackles for Woodgrove.
