Break Down: Joseph Henderson

Break Down: Joseph Henderson

Tennessee added to an already impressive 2014 recruiting class Thursday, when the Vols accepted the commitment of Joseph Henderson? What type of player did Tennessee just land?

PROFILE: Joseph Henderson

SCHOOL: Shaker Heights, Ohio

POSITION: Defensive end

SIZE: 6-foot-4, 225-pounds

RANKING: Three-star prospect

RECRUITING: Committed to Tennessee

I can still remember the first time I saw Joseph Henderson, and he was still a freshman in high school waiting to play his first varsity game. His evaluation from April, 2011 is reprinted below:

EVALUATION: Hard to say much without ever seeing the player in action with pads on, but Henderson has an impressive skill set for someone so young. He has the athletic ability to play at a high level, and the type of frame that will fill out over time. Most impressive was his speed and explosion off the football, which cannot be taught. Henderson is definitely one to keep an eye on for the future.

WHAT IS TENNESSEE GETTING WITH HENDERSON? This is a player with above average athletic ability for his size, first and foremost. Joseph Henderson has the speed needed to play on the defensive line in the SEC. He could also stand up and play outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme. He can really fly coming forward, and should be effective getting to the quarterback.

WHAT ARE THE CONCERNS? Henderson will need to add weight, especially in his upper body to be able to control the line of scrimmage from a physical point of view. To date, he has been a finesse player, using his speed and athleticism advantage over his opponents. Henderson will need to get stronger and play a more physical brand of football, but he should be able to do both at Tennessee.

WHAT ARE THE INTANGIBLES? This is a great person on and off the field, and Henderson comes from a successful family. This is a player that has all the ingredients needed to succeed in the classroom, in society, and on the football field. Henderson might be a little raw in his development right now, but the ceiling is high and he has the work ethic needed to reach his full potential.
