MVP- Mt. Pointe WR Emmanuel Butler. He was unstoppable for much of the day. He was impressive enough that despite limited junior film, he was offered by the NAU staff. This is Butler's first offer.
Big Man Notes
1st place went to Hamilton. Chaparral was second and Boulder Creek was third.
MVP- Pinnacle DE Cole Neubauer
Colleges on Hand
Of course the staff from NAU was there by so were part of the staffs from Washington and Colorado. UW defensive coordinator Peter Sirmon was able to check out the talent and former NAU OL coach Gary Bernardi, now at CU, was back in his old stomping grounds.
Along with Butler, the Lumberjacks offered Valley Vista WR/CB Terry Juniel. First offer for Juniel.
The Usual Suspects
*Not much can be said that already hasn't been said about Kyle Allen, Mark Andrews, Jalen Jelks, Austin Hall, Qualen Cunningham, Keenan Walker, Trevor Wood, Tyler Whiley and Jordan Schlueter. They were all there and all looked good like always.
*Few kids looked as good as Boulder Creek junior DT Nathan Elridge. He is super thick, standing 6-3 270. I loved his sophomore film but this was my first chance to see him in person and I like what I saw. Will be a big time D1 player.
*I am a big fan of Hamilton junior DE Caleb Peart. Kid gets off the ball. Will have plenty of offers.
*Mt. Ridge head coach Bobby GReen is high on junior LB Billy McEowen and Green has coached plenty of good ones. McEowen is a good looking kid, standing 6-2 and about 215 pounds.
*If I had written this article yesterday, I would have looked like a genius, calling Pinnacle junior QB Brian Lewerke the next big thing despite him not starting on varsity yet. He looked great at NAU and followed that up with a good performance at Arizona State's camp, running a 4.6 forty and was offered his first scholarship offer.
*Nkeal Harry from Marcos is one of those players that stands out in a crowd. He is all of 6-4 and I was shocked when I found out he was only 15 years old, only going to be a sophomore and has only played 1 year of football. Keep an eye on this kid.
*Mt. Pointe WR Tim Hernandez was impressive. He's the younger brother of NFL wideout Brian Hernandez and it looks like his brother has taught him a thing or two. Generously listed at 5-10 165, if Hernandez were 6-0, would have walked away with an NAU offer. That being said, don't be surprised if NAU does end up offering.
*Hernandez's QB at Mt. Pointe, Antonio Hinojosa may be the least talked about QB in the state despite throwing for over 2,000 yards. He's not real big so recruiters will shy away but the kid can play college football at some level.
*Valley Vista junior DT Abram Cook did well at the camp on Friday and moved around well in the skills session on Saturday. At 5-10, Cook doesn't have ideal height but he is a bowling ball inside and gets off the ball.
*NAU extended an offer to Chandler DT Cruz Flores before the camp. He looked good running around and is strong, thick and looks like he bought his calves from a magazine. He stands in the 6-0 to 6-1 range.
*There is no secret that I am a big fan of Marcos QB Josh Eckley, he is very athletic. He lined up at wide receiver some on Saturday.
*Chandler's Bryce Perkins is finally going to get his chance to start. ASU and UCLA have already offered Perkins. He is a big, good looking kid. He is still raw in his technique though. He played a lot of wideout as a junior, could that be his college position?
*I got to spend a little time with Chandler DT Jordan Hoyt. Not only is he a good looking kid, standing 6-3 255 but he is very well spoken. NAU's coaches wouldn't leave his side. The Lumberjacks have offered as has UC-Davis but if he had not been hurt as a junior, I firmly believe no 1AA program could touch him.
*Another Chandler player I really like is CB Wes Sutton. He looked good and if I were a betting man, I would say that NAU offers this kid soon.
*Chaparral DT Marshall Forest is put together. Could be an O or D lineman at the next level.
*Wesley Payne from Mt. Pointe is hands down one of the top LBs in the state.
*Jordan Robinson, the safety that transferred from Brophy to Mesquite, is an intriguing prospect. Has good size.
*Basha has a good looking group of prospects. LB Brandon Rutt looks the part, standing 6-2 215. This is the second passing tournament in a row that I have really liked what I saw from QB Zach Werlinger. NAU offered RB Rajhan Meriwether last year after this camp and he looked solid again.
*Austin Cottrell, the transfer from O'Connor to Mt. Ridge, will really help the Mountain Lions. He is a tall receiver that can stretch the field.
*I have talked about Notre Dame Prep LB Phillip Caniglia before. Good looking kid, solid film and outstanding grades. He will get recruited.
*I was a fan of Brophy DB/WR Ryan Castellani as a sophomore, I still am. I think he's a safety at the next level.
*Trey Lauer played Will LB for Mt. Pointe last year but likely is a safety in college. He will attend Montana's camp next week and has been told he could be offered with a good performance there.
*No one has talked about OLB Christian Poe or safety Terrance Johnson from Cienega but if you watched Cienega play on Saturday, you would wonder why not. Both are tall long players that can cover a lot of ground. Both are at least 6-3.
One thing was certain on Saturday, there was no shortage of height in the offensive line group. Mt. Ridge has a pair of tall bookend tackle. Troy Kowalski is at least 6-4 and ran very well, clocking a 5.03. New Mexico State offered Troy last week. Nick Card is a little bit taller and a little more raw but he has some tools to work with.
*There isn't much film on Desert Mountain's Andres Mariani because he didn't play much as a junior. The 6-5 250 pounder will play both ways and while he camped at NAU on Friday as an DL, I think he is a future OT.
*Valley Vista also has a pair of tall OTs. Ezra Maldanado measured 6-7 300, while Roberto Roman was 6-4 285.
*Keep an eye on Hamilton's Trent Moore. He played a lot of TE last year but will move inside full time in 2013.
There were some talented TEs in the group and the top kid was Chaparral's Trevor Wood. He is an elite level TE But here were a few lesser known names I really liked.
*Could Highland be the Stanford of Arizona High School football? They have two very good TEs in Gilbert transfer Dusty Cook and Colin Gardner. Cook suffered a concussion later in the event but looked good early on. Expect to hear that he receives an offer very soon as rumor is that Western Illinois is very close to offering.
*What\'s in the water in Vail? I mentioned the height of Poe and Johnson earlier but TE Alec Daniels is every bit of 6-4.
*Bearpaw Mosly from Chandler. He is 6-5 and weights 215 pounds. He transferred from San Carlos last year and sat out due to transfer rules. Keep an eye on him.
Built for Speed
*100 meter state champ Paul Lucas from Mt. Pointe played a lot of safety for the Pride.
*Jalen Brown from Mt. Pointe has been on a tour of Midwest schools.
*Derron Brown from Fairfax was a ta camp in California.
*Dominique Fenstermacher from Mt. Pointe played in the first game but sat out after tweaking his hip.
*Chandler WRs Dionte Sykes and Mitch McCulley are both recovering from injures.
*Casey Tucker from Hamilton was not there for his team's big man title.
*Jake Grant from Horizon was at Utah's camp and walked away with a Ute offer.
