Just eleven years ago, Richard Olekanma moved with his family from Nigeria to the United States -- and Monday, he committed to Toledo to play football for the Rockets.
The journey to college football for the Downers Grove North (Ill.) rising senior has been a long one, but definitely worth it for Olekanma.
"I am really excited, Toledo is a great school and program," Olekanma said. "I am really excited to be a part of it."
Olekanma received his first offer, from Southern Illinois just weeks ago. The process continued for Olekanma after camping at Toledo and earning an offer.
"It felt really good," Olekanma said of committing. "The coaching staff really liked me and I liked the school a lot so to me it was a no brainer."
Plus, Olekanma is thinking of going into the medical field, which made Toledo even more attractive.
"They have a really good medical program and a hospital on campus and the campus looks really nice," Olekanma said.
Olekanma wasn't the only prospect that Toledo added a verbal from Monday, his Downers Grove North teammate Vontae Diggs also committed to the Rockets.
"We both talked about how nice it would be to play together at the next level so it was a factor in the decision," Olekanma said.
He added with a laugh, "Yeah, we sort of planned it out."
Diggs will play defensive end at Toledo, and Olekanma will stick with linebacker. In the meantime, both are focused on their high school ball.
"Expect us to ball out this season and hopefully bring home a state title," Olekanma said. "I am looking forward to just having a great year for the Trojans."
