Scout's analysts talk about which skill prospects they think will shine this weekend...
Scout.com's complete coverage of The Opening 2013 presented by NIKE
The Scout.com national recruiting analysts will be in Beaverton, Oregon, all week for
at the Nike Headquarters. Leading up to The Opening, a gathering of 150 of the top prospects from all across the country, they are focusing on some of the key things to watch in the summer's biggest event.
Which prospect at a skill position from your region are you most excited to see on the big stage at The Opening?
Scott Kennedy (Director of Scouting):
This one is a fairly easy pick for me, because I've seen every one of the quarterbacks throw in person except Florida commitment
of Davidson, N.C. His film is very good, and several of our other scouts have seen him in person, but this will be my first time to compare apples to apples in a skill set setting that showcases the mechanics of playing quarterback.
Brian Dohn (East):
I cannot wait to see St. Peter’s Prep (Jersey City, N.J.) cornerback
. He is the only class of 2015 player from the region, and his recruitment has taken off. He’s a 6-foot-1, 190-pound cornerback with great hips and length.
Jamie Newberg (South):
is it for me. This kid had a monster spring and spring game. He has been lights out at camps and 7-ons. I ‘m really anxious to see what he can do at the Opening. He’s freaky at times. And there are some that believe he can be a better corner if he were to decide to play on that side of the ball.
Chad Simmons (South):
Penn State commitment
is one I am really looking forward to seeing in person. His tape is good, but I have heard he is even better live. I want to see his combination of size and speed. There is some chatter that he could be a better cornerback in college than receiver, so I want to see him in person to get a guage of just what exactly the Penn State Nation is getting.
Greg Powers (Midlands):
has amassed some amazing numbers while playing for Mount Pleasant, but will be stepping up the competition level here facing off against some of the country’s finest. Most have pegged him for the slot, but I believe he has the skill sets and the over the top ability to be an outside receiver in college. This will be a big test for him if he can find the consistency and proves that he has the vertical game to stand the test.
Allen Trieu (Midwest):
recently committed to Ohio State after a great summer camp. He had excellent testing numbers at NFTC Chicago, and I think, given his recent Buckeye commit, a lot of eyes are going to be on him and I'm excited to see how he can use his speed and skills against some of the best in the country.
Greg Biggins (West):
Gardena (Calif.) Serra ATH
. It's not just the fact that he's the top overall prospect in the west, but he's a dynamic two-way athlete who should shine at this event on both sides of the ball. He's a very talented corner but it would be a crime if he wasn't allowed some reps at receiver. He has elite speed and game breaking ability and it will be fun to watch him match up with some of the other elite athletes in the country to see just how good Jackson really is.
Brandon Huffman (West):
I'm going with Long Beach (Calif.) Poly safety
, but mostly because he's working as a receiver. We have Smith ranked as a safety, #1 in the country in fact, but he's also a terrific playmaker and with his size and speed and skill set, figures to be a matchup problem for corners. Smith has said his heart is at receiver, but he realizes he has a higher ceiling at safety, and knows that is his likely destination in college, but at The Opening, he will get to play receiver till his heart is content.
