Small School Lineman Getting Attention
Bagdad, Arizona is not known for producing college football talent. The little mining town between Kingman and Phoenix is a big producer of copper. No player from their 8-man football team has played division-one football in recent history. That could change.Three years ago, Jerhen Ertel graduated from Bagdad as a 6-6 220 pound TE/DE and signed with Glendale Community College in Glendale, AZ. He redshirted in his first year with the Gauchos and then started every game at left tackle in year two. Now standing 6-6 275 and playing in one of the tougher junior college leagues in the country, Ertel has turned into a legit D1 prospect that is receiving attention from multiple schools.Ertel says, "A lot of schools came by in the Spring to our practice. Arizona, New Mexico, Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State and New Mexico all seem to be the most interested but no one has offered yet."He continues, "Everyone has basically said they want to see me first few games of this year but they are very excited about the progress I have made in my time here in junior college. I have worked very hard, put on a lot of good weight and have improved a lot from a football standpoint. Coming from 8-man football, I didn't face the kind of players I have gone against here."Ertel wants to major in engineering and maintains above a 3.0 GPA. He will graduate in December and have two years to play two.
