Jeighlon Cornell was a total unknown entering Saturday’s U.S. Army National Combine in Kansas City. The Olathe (KS) North prospect drew rave reviews, earning an invitation to the Army Combine in San Antonio. Cornell breaks down his performance with FOX Sports NEXT.

Saturday’s U.S. Army National Combine in Kansas City showcased a number of prospects already on the radar of area Division I programs. One of the day’s best efforts came from a relative unknown.

Olathe (KS) North defensive back Jeighlon Cornell put on a show in individual drills and 7-on-7, earning an invitation to Football University’s Army National Combine event in San Antonio, Texas.

“I haven’t played a lot of varsity yet,” Cornell said with a smile. “It’s my first year starting.”

The 6-foot, 183-pound junior was smooth in coverage throughout the day. Cornell earned praise from Football University coaches for his ability to stay over the top of every route he saw from opposing receivers.

“My game is pass first,” the Eagles DB said. “I like to make big hits. It’s fun. I like to be a ball hawk.”

“I just like to have the ball, but I don’t like offense for some reason.”

Cornell flashed his athleticism during the testing portion of the Army Combine, posting a personal best in the broad job of 8 feet, 10 inches.

“It’s amazing,” he said of being selected for January’s National Combine. “I didn’t know what to say. As soon as he said ‘I don’t know how to pronounce this,’ I was like ‘I wonder if it’s me.’ I was kind of shocked.”

The under-the-radar junior might have been surprised, but legendary Olathe North head coach Gene Wier wasn’t.

“He’s always told me he believes in me,” Cornell said of Wier. “He knows it [interest from college programs] is coming. He sees I have a little bit of confidence issues, and always reminds me to keep my head up.”

As a player that’s never started a varsity game, Cornell looks at the invitation as a challenge. “I’ve got to go there and show them everything I have,” he said, nodding his head. “Something to prove.”
