That changed quickly over the next six months. He got up to three dozen offers, he visited close to 10 schools over the summer, and he is now ready to choose the one best for him.
"I am ready," Sims said to Scout. "I will be committing on August 24. We are still working on the details, but it will likely be at my school and I know it will be on the 24th."
There is nothing special about August 24. Sims was eyeing September 14, the three month anniversary of his grandmother's passing, but he pushed it up a little.
He is eager to end the recruiting process.
"It can get a little overwhelming sometimes, so when I announce my decision, it will take a big load off of me. I will be able to focus on my high school, get serious about my senior year, and just have fun with everything. I am really looking forward to committing soon."
In his mind, Sims knows the school he will choose on August 24 and it will be one of five schools.
The Scout 100 wideout out of Monroe (La.) Ouchita Parish made it clear that all have a shot.
"Oklahoma State is a great school and that get the ball to their top playmakers. I really like Ole Miss a lot. Their coaches are great and it is just nice there.
"I could see myself at any of these schools. I like all five a lot."
It is now five days away. The No. 9 receiver in the country made his mind up about two weeks ago and the decision will be shared with everyone very soon.
Sims is a 6-foot-4, 210 pound outside wide receiver who steadily moved up the rankings over the past 12 months.
