What to Like
Tallahassee (Fla.) Rickards High School quarterback Charlie Kelly is fun to watch play football and is one of the most productive skill players in north Florida this year. Diminutive at maybe 5-foot-8 and 180-pounds the senior is having one heck of a season. Kelly has completed 55 of 91 passes for 924 yards including 12 touchdowns against two interceptions five games into the season. He is definitely a threat running the ball as well having amassed 399 yards on the ground averaging over 8 yards a carry. The talented runner has three rushing scores. At quarterback Kelly has a live and accurate arm when he has time to set up in the pocket and see the field. He is very good at getting out of the pocket and making throws on the run. As a runner he is dynamic. Kelly runs with great balance and vision. He has very good speed and can change directions in a split second. The senior has also shown himself to be tough and durable as a runner often attempting to run through people. He also has the ability to make defenders look silly with his ability to cut and weave his way through traffic while maintaining his balance and staying on his feet and running for huge chunks of yardage. Kelly also plays extremely hard and is a good leader, rarely getting frustrated if at all, he simply continues to compete.
Room for Improvement
To be honest the real weakness in Kelly’s game would be his physical limitations due to his height. Kelly is listed at 5-foot-8 but after seeing him in person I am not sure that he is really that tall. At quarterback he clearly doesn’t have the size to play the position at the college level. The only real concern at either wide receiver or running back at the college level would be his “true” top end speed but against Lincoln which as at least a half dozen FBS prospects Kelly proved himself fast enough.
Kelly committed to Alabama State as an athlete and more than likely will end up as an inside/slot wide receiver, running back or less likely cornerback in college. He is a tremendous football player who plays bigger than his size. If Kelly was two inches taller he would be getting interest from more FBS programs because he is both talented and productive. I am not sure that there is a high school prospect that competes any harder than Kelly, his love for the game and his desire to win is evident. Kelly is the kind of kid coaches want on their team because he plays every play under control but also plays like it is the last snap he may ever take. Alabama State got themselves a heck of a football player in Kelly. There may be better college football prospects in the Tallahassee area but Charlie Kelly is certainly one of the best if not the best football player in the Tallahassee area.
