You guys are asking Tyriq to do some things this year that he didn't do at Lee's Summit last year. How has he adapted and adjusted to those roles?
Tyriq is the type of athlete -- he's a smart enough player that he can adapt to anything that we ask of him. He's a good enough athlete that if we need Tyriq to play coverage, he can play coverage. If we need him to play inside linebacker, he can do that. If we need him to play outside linebacker and move forward and put him in blitz packages, he can do that as well.
What did Michigan State say they saw in him that brought the offer about?
The instincts with knowing he's been playing this position only for four or five weeks, and to have those natural instincts of being able to run to the ball, diagnose the play, play forward, and play fast is something they figure translates well into what they do up in East Lansing.
I think people assume that if Michigan offers, it's all over, but how does Tyriq view that?
Tyriq's a smart kid. He said from day one that he was really going to write his own path. He has a great relationship with his father and really looks up to him, but at the same time, he knows he's an individual, so he's genuinely looking for the best fit for him. It's not Michigan and then the recruitment is over with type of scenario. All of the colleges that are looking at him, he's really taking every one of them into consideration.
Beyond football, what kind of a kid is Tyriq?
He's the most well rounded kid I've ever coached on and off the field. He tutors middle school kids, he's active in the church community, and he's exceptional academically.
Have any other schools come in and shown interest recently?
Vanderbilt has been in contact about Tyriq, Maryland has been in contact, Penn State has been in contact. I know Florida State has shown some interest as well.
Has he heard from Michigan at all recently?
We haven't talked to Michigan. He's been to a couple games. I think the last time he talked to Michigan was at the Notre Dame game and they said they were continuing their evaluation process and they would be in contact.
With Jalen Embry, where is everything at with him?
Coach Genyk from Wisconsin is coming in [Friday]. He'll be in the school to check on the kids and we're going to have some discussions around setting up an official to Wisconsin once Coach Genyk comes in tomorrow.
Once that official is set and done, will that be it?
Iowa official, Wisconsin official, decision.
What about Avonte Maddox? With the year he's having, any new schools for him?
Oregon actually contacted us about Avonte, requested his transcripts earlier this week, so of course we obliged, but right now, he's firmly committed to Pitt and it's only inquiries.
And what about the young guys, are there any kids coming up we should be aware of?
Dontre Boyd, a 2016 cornerback and Jesse Johnosn, 2016 strong safety, they're sure-fire BCS kids. Both are having big years in the secondary to kind of balance off Jalen and Avonte being in the secondary and it really gives you nowhere to throw with having those two kids in the secondary. Jesse Johnson is 5-11, 180-pounds and Dontre Boyd is 5-10, 160 and we call Dontre baby Avonte, he's Maddox Jr.
