Gardenhire gave an early commitment to San Jose State but opened up the process earlier this week.
"I love San Jose State and love Coach Donte (Williams)," Gardenhire said. "At the time I committed in the summer, I really thought that was the best offer I was going to get. Then I got Utah and I was still solid with SJSU. Then Boise State came in and I started thinking of opening things up.
"When Washington State offered me, I finally decided that I needed to open things up and make sure I was doing the right thing. It's no disrespect to SJSU, it's a great program, I just really like these schools and have always wanted to play in the Pac 12 or for a big time program like Boise State."
Gardenhire has already visited Utah and had a great trip. This weekend, he'll head to Pullman and check out Washington State.
"I'm really excited about visiting Washington State," Gardenhire said. "I know I'm going to have a great trip and I'm excited to be going with Shead (Rahshead Johnson). We're real close and would love to play together in college.
"My trip to Boise State will be (Dec. 13) and I'm looking forward to that one too. That's a big time program and I've heard nothing but good things about the school. I might be ready to decide after that trip, or if a few more schools get involved, I could take more visits. I was hearing a lot from Miami for a while there and I thought there were close to offering but it hasn't happened yet. Right now, I'm just excited about the recruiting process and looking forward to seeing how it plays out."
