Scottsdale (Az) Saguaro beats Queen Creek for to win D3 state title

The Saguaro defense forced a three and out and it took Saguaro's high powered offense just a few plays to strike. Luke Rubenzer hit Christian Kirk on a 38 yard TD pass for an early 7-0 lead.

The D forced another 3 and before you knew it, Sagauro was on the board again, this time on a 6 yard Kirk TD run. PAT no good, 13-0 Saguaro.

Queen Creek didn't panic. They stuck to their game plan and had great success on this drive running right at Saguaro. Weston Barlow and Matt Guida pounded the ball down the field and Guida scored from a few yards out. 13-6 after 1.

Just like last week versus Desert Edge, Saguaro couldn't be stopped on offense. This time Rubenzer ran for two first downs before Isaiah Reece got the 3rd score of the game for the Sabercats. 20-6.

Queen Creek's run game set up a play action pass. Bryce Dobbs hooked up with Mike Kemmerer for a 47 yard gain, then a Guida run set up 1st and goal. Barlow punched this one in, 20-12.

Then we had more of the Christian Kirk show. Kirk ripped off an amazing 54 yard TD run for his 3rd score of the night. Queen Creek fumbled the kickoff and then facing 4th and 18, Rubenzer hit Kirk on a screen pass and Kirk did the rest of the work, racing for another score and building the lead to 33-12.

Queen Creek responded with a 66 yard Barlow TD run to stay in the game. 33-19.

Saguaro had a chance to extend the lead before the half but couldn't convert despite getting the ball to the 5 yard line. 33-19 at the half.

The teams exchanged punts to start the half and on Saguaro's 2nd drive, Kirk went 27 yards to the 7 yard line and Rubenzer scored shortly after. 40-19.

The team's exchanged scores in the 3rd and into the 4th quarter. QC got another score from Guida and Saguaro on a Rubenzer TD pass to Cameron Koutsalas. That pass was Rubenzer's 61st of the year and gave him the single season state record.

Final Saguaro 47 Queen Creek 25

Both teams did what they do. Saguaro spread the field and ran read option. Queen Creek stuck with their power running game. Saguaro came out and forced two 3 and outs and while that wasn't the deciding factor, it set the tone of the game. It also allowed the Sabercat offense to build a 13-0 lead, one which Queen Creek could never overcome.

Game Ball

Love what Luke Rubenzer did today but Christian Kirk is my MVP for his 4 TD performance.
