The speedy Puryear has 41 tackles and three interceptions, and he gave his thoughts on the direction of his recruitment, and what he wants in a school.
What schools do you talk with the most? What are they telling you?
Puryear: Albany, Marist, Lehigh, Buffalo, Wagner, Sacred Heart, New Hampshire, Georgetown, Central Connecticut, New Haven, Massachusetts, Stetson, Stony Brook, Stonehill, American International, Yale, Pennsylvania and Princeton.
New Haven offered after I ran a 4.3 in front of (their) coaches. Yale, UPenn, Princeton, Lehigh and Georgetown need me to score higher on the SATs. The rest said December is when they will start their recruiting heavily but all the coaches stay in touch, talk to me often.
Mostly, I hear from a lot of schools that teams are pulling in 6-foot-2 or bigger receivers, so at 5-9 I may be small. Some coaches say my speed and vertical is Division I and my highlight shows I can cover bigger receivers. Some writers call me Larry Island. That helps because it shows I'm respected.
Buffalo called me the Honey Badger 2.0 after I camped there this summer.. What's funny is that Buffalo saw me at a Pittsburgh camp and was shocked they never heard of me in Brooklyn. I had a 4.4 (40-yard dash) and a 9-foot, 5-inch standing broad jump in front of (Pitt) coach (Paul) Chryst, so Buffalo's recruitment for me went harder.
From that they know I can play at that level. Like three coaches said, I'd probably be used as a athlete or nickel back, but I always say I can play everywhere when asked because (the Lincoln) coaches put me all over the secondary and are always coaching me and teaching me knew things.
2. What visits did you make and what did you see at those schools?
Puryear:Albany, Buffalo, Marist, Pitt, New Haven, Lafayette, Towson, Stetson, Wagner. I want to get to UMass and Stony Brook but between class and tutoring I can't make it over until after the championship game, so most likely in December. I liked all the schools, some of them are huge. Schools like Marist are the size of my block, but I love that because it sits on the water. Buffalo has two large campuses, but they love their teams and all of the schools look safe.
3. Do you have any visits set?
Puryear: UMass is the only additional visit I plan to make, that will be in December.
4. Do you have a leader?
Puryear:I'm down to my final five, but when a school like Georgetown calls, you have to listen. A Georgetown degree is big and in the end I want to finish college with a degree. I don't have one leader yet. I'm just thinking, ‘I'll be here for the next four to five years so it has to be a place that feels like home, but also a team where I feel good and the teams are on the rise.
5. What do you want in a school?
Puryear: Athletics, because I may run track, but I have to have football. Good business, marketing, physical therapy programs are needed. That's my direction.
