California's Freshman Phenom: Nathan Tilford
Director of Scouting
Posted Dec 2, 2013
Freshman phenom Nathan Tilford stole the show at running back for Upland in a FOX Sports West Game of the Week two weeks ago. Here's a look at the big, powerful freshman in action.
In 12 years I've maybe written about two freshmen... maybe... Two weeks ago, two of the best performances I saw during a playoff weekend were a pair of freshmen on opposite sides of the country. First was quarterback
of McEachern High School (
) in Powder Springs, Ga., and the same night Hockman was having his big night, freshman running back
was putting his Upland team on his back and advancing in the California playoffs.
At 6'1 and 200 pounds Tilford is a big running back by any measure in high school. As a freshman, he's just plain huge. Tilford runs with power, quickness and balance. He always seems to be falling forward, even if he's getting hit in the jaw. Tilford had a spectacular hurdle play that led to a first down, but he went to the well one time to often, a mistake he'll likely learn from, and still powered his way into the endzone.
I get asked all the time when do I begin scouting a player, and my answer is the same "when they show up."
Nathan Tilford showed up in a big way two weeks ago in a win over Santiago. See him in action here:
