Tallahassee (Fla.) Rickards High School linebacker Malik Slater has held his one and only scholarship offer since earlier this summer. UAB had offered the 6-foot-0 and 215-pound defender prior to the start of the 2013. That has now changed as Slater recently received three new offers and has begun receiving new interest from two other schools.
“I have gotten offers from Alabama State, Jacksonville University and Florida Tech. It’s another blessing. I have been talking to Alabama State for a while and was kind of expecting their offer,” said Slater of his newest opportunities.
The linebacker, just like on the playing field, initiated contact with the coaches from Jacksonville.
“I contacted Jacksonville and they got back in touch with me after watching my film. The defensive line coach said that they liked my film when they saw it. I will possibly go on an official visit to J-U on January 17th,” said Slater of Jacksonville.
Florida Tech has been aware of Slater since they saw him in action at a satellite camp this summer in Tallahassee.
“Florida Tech offered me over this past weekend. I have been in contact with them since they had a camp here this summer. It’s good to know that I have another team that believes I am good enough to play in college,” said Slater of the Tech offer.
The senior has also been hearing from to schools of late who are recruiting him but to-date haven’t extended offers.
“I have been talking to both Middle Tennessee and UCF lately. They are both interested but neither one has offers yet,” finished Slater.
The senior has a solid season in 2013 and was the leader of the Rickards defense. He is a hard-nosed, physical linebacker who thrives in the box against the run. Slater is a sure and steady tackler who made 103 stops for his team this year including four sacks and 13 tackles behind the line of scrimmage. He also caused three fumbles and recovered two more this year.
