Dallas, Texas - Grant Watanabe (5'10/225) of Brennan High School was named Defensive MVP of the Texas 4A-D1 State Championship Game despite his team having lost, the only such player to win such an honor from a losing squad.

Grant Watanabe (5'10/225) was relentless in trying to shut down Jerrod Heard's Denton Guyer squad in the Texas 4A-D1 State Championship Game. Watanabe's Brennan team came up short, but it wasn't for a lack of effort on his part.

Watanabe was named Defensive MVP of the game by the media in attendance, including this one, despite his team's loss, the only such player among 10 MVPs in five games I've attended to win such an honor from a losing team. Watanabe revealed after the game that he'd been playing with a broken bone in his foot. One wouldn't have guessed based on his on field performance.

He is a tremendous hitter who reads plays well and streaks sideline to sideline arriving with an impact.

Watanabe is committed to play for the Colorado Buffaloes next year.
