No. 6 St. John Bosco outlasts No. 5 De La Salle to win CIF State Open Division title...

2013 CIF STATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP BOWL GAMES PRESENTED BY FARMERS

CARSON – The 2013 CIF State Football Championship Bowl Games, Presented by Farmers kicked-off Friday night with the Division IV and Division I games, followed by the Division III, Division II and Open Division games on Saturday. Below is a recap of the weekend’s action.

Open Division: St. John Bosco (Bellflower) 20, De La Salle (Concord) 14
In dramatic fashion, the St. John Bosco Braves withstood the final rally from the four-time defending Open Division Champion (2009-12) De La Salle Spartans to claim their first State title.

After the Braves first quarter field goal, the contest’s initial explosive play came in the second quarter as Bosco’s QB Josh Rosen threw a 60 yard strike to WR Jaleel Wadood for a touchdown. Rosen finished the game completing 12 of 17 passes for 200 yards and two touchdowns. His favorite target was Wadood, who led all receivers with five catches for 113 yards and a score. The Braves run game was strong as well; Sean McGrew rushed for 148 yards on 24 attempts.

De La Salle’s Chris Williams completed 6 of 14 passes for 97 yards; John Velasco ran well for the Spartans, as he finished with 21 rushes for 93 yards and one touchdown.

The game was sealed in the final minutes when Bosco’s Chandler Leniu tipped, then intercepted a Williams pass. Leniu led the Braves defense with 10 total tackles.

Division I: Bakersfield 56, Del Oro (Loomis) 26
What started out as a shootout turned into a 30-point route as Bakersfield defeated Del Oro 56-26 for their first Modern Era CIF State Championship and seventh all-time State crown.

The Drillers were led by Asauni Rufus who ran 19 rushes for 196 yards and two touchdowns. Jonathon Malone led Bakersfield’s defensive efforts with nine tackles and one sack. Also notable was Kevin Hayes who intercepted and returned for 89 yards.

For Del Oro, Dylan Kainrath rushed the ball 35 times for 198 yards and three scores, while Tyler Meteer caught six balls for 83 yards.

Division II: Chaminade (West Hills) 41, Enterprise (Redding ) 9
With a dominant performance from beginning to end, the Chaminade Eagles took home their first ever DII CIF State Championship by defeating the Enterprise Hornets 41-9. The difference was the stalwart Eagle defense that forced Enterprise QB Bobby Luken to throw four interceptions, three of which were made by Chaminade defensive back Donovan Lee.

Offensively, the Eagles were led by QB Brad Kaaya who completed 17 of 23 passes for 276 yards and two touchdowns. Brandyn Lee was on the receiving end of one of those scores; Lee led all receivers with five receptions for 99 yards and one touchdown.

Isaiah Matthews shined in an otherwise daunting performance for the Hornets, rushing for 185 yards on 29 carries with a long of 30 yards. Justin Abney pulled in the Hornets lone touchdown in the final minute of the game.

Division III: Corona del Mar (Newport Beach) 27, Sacred Heart Prep (Atherton) 15
Corona del Mar claimed their first State title as they defeated Sacred Heart Prep 27-15. The Sea Kings struck early, as they jumped out to a quick 21-0 lead in the first quarter. Two touchdowns were thrown by QB Luke Napolitano, who finished the day 7-17 for 73 yards and two scores.

Sacred Heart Prep gave a valiant effort to cut the lead to 21-15 at the half. The Gators first score came on the defensive side of the ball, as Andrew Robinson took his interception back 37 yards for the touchdown. Mason Randall completed 10 of 17 passes for 107 yards, while also handing off to Ben Burr-Kirven seven times for 78 yards and one touchdown. Burr-Kirven also led the Gator defense with 16 total tackles and a forced fumble.

The Corona del Mar defense showed its true colors, holding Sacred Heart to only one offensive score. Barrett Barbato had 10 tackles and an interception in the loss.

Division IV: Central Catholic (Modesto) 36, Bakersfield Christian 23
The Central Catholic Raiders defended their title claiming their second consecutive State Championship in the Division IV game. Central Catholic was led by the Bland brothers in rushing; Montell had 16 carries, 103 yards and two touchdowns and Reggie added 17 carries for 88 yards and one touchdown.

Defensively, the Raiders were led by Donovin Towndsend who recorded 12 tackles, (four for a loss) and a sack. Also on defense, Jared Rice recorded six tackles, three pass break ups, and a fumble recovery which he returned for 22 yards.

For Bakersfield Christian, Brandon Jones finished the day 26 of 41 for 380 yards and two passing touchdowns and ran in for another. His favorite target of the day was Hayden Kuchta who caught eight balls for 116 yards and one touchdown.
