The top storyline of the week may be what the current Texas Longhorn commits like quarterback Jerrod Heard are saying about the program and their futures in it now that Mack Brown will be moving on. UT has yet to name Brown’s successor at the program and a delay may signify that the school is waiting on the current NFL and college bowl season to wrap up to give itself a larger variety of candidates. That puts prospects in a somewhat sticky situation with signing day just over a month away and ammunition for other schools to recruit them with.

The only real major storyline from the West at the Army Bowl is who’s Colorado’s top prospect. Is it Christian McCaffrey, the Valor Christian star and state player of the year, who’s headed to Stanford? Or is it newcomer Nathan Starks, who moved to Colorado before the season, but had to sit some because of the transfer? McCaffrey has been the best player in Colorado the past two years, no question. Starks may be the better college prospect, but just hasn’t gotten to play as much (off the field issues didn’t help). This week could separate one from the other for the final state rankings.

In my part of the country, there has been a lot of talk about who the better back is, Sony Michel or Nick Chubb? The two will go out this week in San Antonio and have a chance to show just who that is. Both are committed to Georgia and Michel is the higher ranked of the two, but some feel Chubb should be that guy. It will be interesting to see who Scout likes more at the end of the week.

Can Ohio State commits Jalyn Holmes and Curtis Samuel influence the decision of uncommitted Derrick Nnadi? There are seven Ohio State commits in the game, including five on the East roster, and it will be intriguing to see if Holmes and Samuel can make an impact in regards to Nnadi.

Joe Mixon (6’1, 210) – Oakley (Calif.) Freedom
Mixon will make his long awaited college commitment during the AA game and he’s promising something special. Mixon recently cut his list to Oklahoma, UCLA and Wisconsin, omitting long time favorite California. Does that mean the Bears are out? Maybe not, again, Mixon said he’s planning a ‘surprise announcement’ so don’t be shocked if the Bears are still in the discussion when all is said and done here.

Who’s the best RB prospect in this game? It’s loaded here at this position. You just wish backs got more touches, so much of this evaluation will come down to what happens during the week of practice. Running backs Sony Michel (Plantation American Heritage), Jalen Hurd (Hendersonville, Tenn./Beech), Elijah Hood (Charlotte, N.C./Catholic), Joe Mixon (Oakley, Calif./Freedom), Nick Chubb (Cedartown, Ga.), Royce Freeman (Imperial, Calif.) are all in this Army game.
