Sterling Newman Central Catholic's Jacob Barnes was an All-State selection on both sides of the ball this season, and the 6-foot-3, 265-pound junior is looking to take the next step in his recruitment after getting it off to a good start.
"It was a pretty busy summer and fall for me," he said. "Akron offered this summer, they liked me at center even though I have never played that position before."
In-state Illinois is a program Barnes has heard from and visited, and will see them again soon.
"I went Illinois for a visit and a coach came to see me at my school. I'm going down for junior day in early February. They really like me for D-line, which is my favorite."
The SEC is also interested.
"I was being recruited by Vanderbilt and we had a great time on a visit down there. But I'm not sure what's going on now that Coach Franklin is gone."
In addition to those programs, there are a handful of others he is reporting interest from.
"Iowa visited my school and I'm hoping to set up a visit with them soon. We have a friend that knows some of the coaches at Northern Illinois and they say they are interested, but I haven't heard from them yet. I visited Purdue for a game as well. Ohio and Kansas State asked me to come to a game, but we were in playoffs at that time."
In addition to his All-State honors, Barnes also made All-Conference and All-Area. He has also participated on the varsity basketball team and track and field.
